LYPURÁ - 'á' review

LYPURÁ - 'á' review

These guys from Germany play new-school screamo that fluctuates between blistering blast beats with noisy, textured chord-work, and clean, bright picked sections. There's a similar contrast in vocals too, often favouring multiple layers of screaming, but they're actually surprisingly good clean singers too; they can harmonise really well, sometimes reminding me of a less wild version of HUMAN HANDS or even THURSDAY, but also surprising me in the first track by having an almost indie-sounding chorus. A couple of tracks in the middle break up the tone a little, with 'A Lost Harmony' bringing in some different influences, sounding more like the post-rock of TALONS, but with some deeper, almost doomy vocals, and 'Growing' adds a slower, delay-driven guitar sound, with a gang-vocal dominated ending. These are then followed by an instrumental post-rock-style track, before breaking back into the emo / screamo sound we're used to hearing from them. So yeah, pretty varied stuff; if you already listen to a lot of European screamo, you'll recognise the kind of sound this has, but expect more clean brightness than cathartic aggression. As well as the bands already mentioned, if you like stuff like TITLE FIGHT and I guess stuff like LOMA PRIETA then this might do it for you.

BASEMENT - 'Promise Everything' review

BASEMENT - 'Promise Everything' review

So after a short hiatus, BASEMENT are back with another ten tracks of their heavily 90s-influenced grunge / emo sound, and to be fair, I'm pretty glad they reformed because this is as good as anything that I've heard them do before. It's thick on the guitars with some great, emotive chordwork (that's brighter than what I recall of 'Colour Me in Kindness'), straight and heavy on the bass and drums, and as well as having some really good vocal melodies, the vocalist still plays on that dynamic between his slow, soft, and droney voice, his bigger, fuller singing voice, and that almost-shouting that he does, which gives this a lot of depth and helps to pace the songs and create some pretty big moments. There's something really cool about the simplicity of BASEMENT's stuff; it eschews any technical flare in favour of quite basic playing styles and arrangements, so it's easy to get into and will stick to you really quickly. If you liked their previous stuff (I really liked 'Colour...', and this is a great, if a little brighter, follow up) then you should have no problem getting into this, but if you're not already a fan but you like MILK TEETH, TIGERS JAW, or grunge / emo from the 90s, then this is as good of a place to start as any. My favourite tunes on here are the opener 'Brother's Keeper', the catchiest number 'Aquasun', and the closer 'Halo' which is simple but wonderful, so they might be a good place to start.

CADY - 'Zodiacal Dust' cassette review

CADY - 'Zodiacal Dust' cassette review

CADY (named after Lindsay Lohan's character in 'Mean Girls' of course) features former members of FOR THIS WORLD IS HOLLOW..., and follows on from the intensity of that band, playing awesome blast-beat infused proper-screamo with some really heavy bass, abrasive chordwork in the guitars, accompanied by some ace underlying melody and delay-effect leads, and some seriously chaotic drumming that's as tight as anything. There are parts that make me think of KAOSPILOT, others of TRISTAN TSARA, and others of SAETIA, so hopefully that gives you something to go on. The packaging on this is ace too, with hand constructed, monochromatic cardboard sleeves, and with a little, albeit tough to read, lyric sheet inside. Physical copies may have sold out by now, but go and check this out on their Bandcamp if you like your proper screamo, and listen to opener 'Goodnight Clark Adams' for something to go on. Great stuff.

THE FORECAST - 'Everybody Left' review

THE FORECAST - 'Everybody Left' review

So yeah, here's a belated review of THE FORECAST's excellent final album, 'Everybody Left'; hideously under-rated.

"For me, THE FORECAST were / are a terribly under-rated band. Me and my brother first discovered them when we saw the video to 'These Lights' on MTV2 (back when they played the odd decent tune) and we were blown away by the three part vocal harmonies and the belting female vocals in the chorus and ending, and even though what they've written over the years has been big, catchy, and emotional, it's easy to see why they never quite reached the heights that other bands on Victory might have done; they've never followed trends, changed their sound to fit a scene, or really played anything outrageous. However, what they did do is write truly incredible emo / rock mixed with a very Western / saloon vibe, and some face meltingly huge choruses sung by Shannon Burns, probably one of my favourite female singers, and one hell of a bad-ass bassist. They've been described as something like the perfect soundtrack to whiskey-filled nights, and as well as being perfect road trip / driving music, it definitely has that nostalgic, late-night / early hours, talking around the fire / in the bar feel to it that few bands manage to create.
So as far as this goes compared to previous works, despite having fewer huge, belted choruses, this is probably the poppiest, and most consistently catchy set of songs they've done, and also probably the most energetic album of what I imagine would be great tunes to see live. The Western acoustic vibe still runs through it, with tunes like 'Take Me Down' sounding as though THE EAGLES decided to gain a female vocalist and emo-rock things up a bit, and there are some of their best choruses and sing-a-longs in 'Like a Habit', 'Figure It Out', and 'Way We Were'. The two and three part vocal harmonies are as strong as ever throughout, as is the instrumentation, from catchy time changes in the drum work to the country-ish guitar melodies and chord progressions. Fans of THE FORECAST will also love hearing lyrical nods to a lot of older songs, from the line 'you're the one back to your roots, and I'm the dust that lies in you' in 'Sing it Out', to the mentions of many previous song titles like 'Fade In. Fade Out', 'Whiskey's Dead You're Next', and 'You're My Needle' in the closer 'Last Stand', which is a really beautiful and nostalgic link that, if this is to be their final release, is a perfect encore from a band that stuck to their roots, gave us some incredible genuine tunes, and will go down to those that were lucky enough to discover them as one of the most under-rated bands of our time."

'The Stars Are a Free Show' Volume 1

'The Stars Are a Free Show' Volume 1

So yeah, alongside issue six of the zine we released a compilation cassette of bands that had been featured over the years, or were in some way related to the local scene, which included a bunch of genres from thrash-skatepunk, through instrumental emo, ambient, post-hardcore, and up to black-metal. Anyway, the tapes sold out pretty quick, so both sides are now up on Youtube for your convenient listening pleasure. The video in this post is side A, and side B can be found here:

Thanks a lot; enjoy! :)

Texas Is The Reason - 'Do You Know Who You Are?: The Complete Collection' review

Texas Is The Reason - 'Do You Know Who You Are?: The Complete Collection' review

So, I'll hopefully be seeing Texas Is The Reason at the start of August, and in celebration of such an astounding prospect, here's a review from The Screever issue three of their retrospective release that came out on Revelation this year; apologies for the gushing:

"Well, what can really be said about the album that, for me at least, defined and pretty much epitomises an entire genre? On the rare occasions that some uninformed, genre-confused person asks me what I think 'emo' is, I tell them to listen to TEXAS IS THE REASON. 'DYKWYA' originally came out on Revelation in '96, and with apologies for the use of such a cliche, it's as current, and I believe relevant today, and perhaps even more so in this time of such apparent aforementioned genre-confusion, than the time of it's first release. Collected here are the original nine tracks remastered, plus their first e.p, a couple of single tracks that featured on splits in the 90's (including an alternate version of 'Something to Forget'), and two further songs that were written subsequent to the album's first release, and literally every song on here is pure joy to experience; the two newer songs make a nice addition to the original lineup, and for those that don't own their first e.p, here's a chance to witness their cracking, faster, more melodic-punk rock beginnings. The song 'Blue Boy', from a split with THE PROMISE RING is incredible, consistently brilliant with the album tracks, and 'Something to Forget Version 1' is a worthy addition for the surprisingly different song structure and rawer vocal track, including some awesome vocal harmonies in the chorus that I'm surprised didn't make it to the later version. Whether you love TITR, haven't heard of TITR, love emo, or don't really know what emo is, this is absolutely worth getting; an astounding, genre-affirming and defining, and ultimately beautiful collection of songs that I really hope brings to this band all of the attention and credit that they somehow may have missed the first time around, that they so rightly deserve. A masterpiece; pure and simple."
